Beneath Abu Dhabi’s iconic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, a 1,050 sqm permanent exhibition invites visitors into an immersive journey through Islamic history, art, and philosophy — where light itself becomes the primary narrative tool.
Designed by Ralph Appelbaum Associates and illuminated by Michael Grubb Studio, the exhibition titled Light & Peace spans five galleries — each with its own core message: Tolerance, Faith, Expressions, the Grand Mosque, and Universal Coexistence.
The underground “black box” environment presented a rare creative opportunity: complete darkness as a design element. Light levels were meticulously controlled to protect sensitive artefacts, with many displays not exceeding 50 lux, while simultaneously creating a deeply atmospheric visitor experience.
LICLLAB was among the manufacturers specified by Michael Grubb Studio for this landmark commission, contributing custom Neon Flex product to the lighting palette of one of the region’s most significant cultural institutions.
In a space defined by natural wonder and architectural elegance, the lighting had to do more than illuminate — it had to transport guests into a world apart, where the Dead Sea horizon and the warmth of the interior become one continuous experience.
The Edge Social Lounge at Kempinski Ishtar Dead Sea presented a lighting challenge as unique as its setting. Perched on the shores of the Dead Sea — the lowest point on Earth and one of the region's most iconic natural landmarks — the lounge demanded lighting that could honour the grandeur of its surroundings while creating an intimate, sophisticated atmosphere for guests. The space serves multiple functions across the day: a refined daytime retreat with panoramic views across the water, and an atmospheric evening lounge for dining, entertainment, and social occasions. Achieving this required a highly flexible lighting system capable of shifting seamlessly between modes, with precise colour rendering to bring out the richness of the interior's materials and finishes. The specification needed to meet the exacting standards of the Kempinski brand while withstanding the unique environmental conditions of the Dead Sea basin, including high salinity levels and extreme summer temperatures.
LICLLAB responded to the brief with a carefully considered combination of its COMP9 luminaire and bespoke custom Strip LED products, both manufactured in Italy to the highest standards of quality and durability. The COMP9 was specified for its exceptional optical performance and architectural discretion, delivering a precise, high-quality beam that highlights the lounge's interior detailing, material finishes, and decorative elements without visual intrusion. The custom Strip LED system was tailored to the exact colour temperature and output requirements of the space, providing flexible, continuous illumination for cove details, architectural recesses, and feature lighting elements throughout the lounge. Together, the two systems create a layered lighting environment that transitions effortlessly from the warmth of afternoon sunlight to the intimacy of evening ambiance — a seamless extension of Kempinski Ishtar's legendary dedication to guest experience.
